#BTYSTE Business Bootcamp in Kahlifia University, Abu DhabiBy Mari Cahalane,
In April this year BT Ireland delivered the first International BT Business Bootcamp in Kahlifia University in Abu Dhabi. It is also The Year of Innovation in the United Arab Emirates.
The BT Young Scientist (BTYSTE) Business Bootcamp is something that we developed and delivered in Dublin for the last 6 years. It was fantastic to introduce the concept to students in Abu Dhabi. We were hosted by Khalifa University and ran the programme by invitation of and in conjunction with our BT colleagues in Abu Dhabi who run a joint innovation centre called EBTIC in the University.
BTYSTE Alumni go on to make a big difference in the world
Everyone had lots of questions about the exhibition and we were able to talk about many of the Exhibition’s talented alumni who have gone on to become successful scientists, academics, researchers and high-tech entrepreneurs.
In fact our 1978 winner Donald McDonnell joined us via Skype from Duke University in North Carolina where he is now a leading world specialist based in Duke University in South Carolina, in developing cancer drugs for late stage cancers. He spoke from his office in Duke about how he has progressed from being a winner of Young Scientist to the world-renowned Scientist he is today.
In Abu Dhabi where there is no event like BTYSTE the students were nominated from local schools and were interviewed to take up one of the 35 places at the Bootcamp. The students were unbelievable especially when English is their second language. The course was led by John Loftus from BT Ireland and Caroline Gill from Nova UCD the two stalwarts behind the programme each year in Dublin.
We found the experience very rewarding and were delighted with the level of engagement by all of the students who were involved. The winning team was a team of girls from local schools whose project was about car cooling – a real innovative idea for car owners in this desert region.
