Purposeful Business

We use the power of communications to make a better world.

Our business is about bringing together the best networks, the best technology and the best people. Making connections, creating new possibilities. When we do all these things business grows, communities flourish and people get more out of life.

That’s the difference we’re determined to make, every single day.

We live in a digital society, so to build the skilled workforce of tomorrow, we believe that it’s vital for our young people understand the importance of critical subjects like science, technology, engineering and maths. At BT, our goal is to get every young person excited about these subjects by taking them out of the classroom and offering them a platform to create and explore their own ideas.

BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition

BT is the proud organiser and sponsor of the BT Young Scientist & Exhibition, Europe’s longest running and most inspiring science fair. Each year, the Exhibition welcomes more than 50,000 visitors and many of our alumni have gone on to huge success as academics, researchers and entrepreneurs. 2020 will mark BT’s 20th year as custodian of this exciting event and each year up to 200 BT people volunteer to help run this event and make it a continued success. Teen Turn

We’re a proud supporter of Teen Turn, a programme designed to encourage teenage girls from disadvantaged schools to continue studying the subjects of science and technology to Leaving Cert level. Every year, BT offers a two week work experience placement to students to help them learn about the many different careers that subjects like science, technology, engineering and maths offers and to encourage them to see the limitless possibilities available to them in the future.

A responsible business

For us, being responsible means doing all the things you’d expect from an ethical business.

Our customers know they can trust us to protect their privacy and data. And our people know that at every step along the supply chain, and in everything we do, they can trust us to look after them, and the environment.

We never forget to listen to each other and to experts outside our business, either and that’s why we work with Business in the Community to assess and measure the sustainability of our business practices. In 2018, we proudly achieved the Business Working Responsibly Mark, IS0 26000, recognising BT Ireland as one of Ireland’s most responsible businesses.

Supporting good causes

We support good causes and work hard to make a positive impact on society through volunteering, fundraising and financial contributions. Each year, BT employees are allocated three days volunteering leave but we do so much more than that. In 2018 alone, BT people volunteered 12,748 hours of their time for charitable and community causes, and are one of the top three organsiations in the country for volunteering. You can see our full contribution to the community through our annual Business Impact Map, in association with Business in the Community

Give as you earn

When companies and its people join together, amazing things happen and BT’s payroll giving scheme ‘Give As You Earn’ is just one of the many examples of this. For every euro donated by a BT employee through their annual salary, BT will match that amount. Since 2008, BT has donated €423,000 to community and charitable organisations through Give As You Earn, including Focus Ireland, Aoibheann’s Pink Tie, Blossom Ireland, DeterMND, Temple Street, the RNLI, CMRF and much, much more.

That variety of experience, culture and background allows our teams to truly use the power of communication to make a better world, giving everyone products and services which actually make a difference in their lives.

We make sure we do whatever we can to support our people too: making them feel valued and included and unlocking their potential is essential. We're incredibly proud that we've featured again in the Times Top 50 Employees for Women – that's 2017 and 2018.

Employment for People in Migrant Communities (EPIC)

BT is a proud supporter of Business in the Community’s EPIC programme, which supports individuals from other countries to find employment in Ireland. Since we began supporting the programme in 2008, BT has provided IT training for over 1,530 EPIC participants. To find out more about EPIC click here

By some estimates, gender equality in the workplace won't be achieved until 2095. That's not good enough.  We want to change the perception of our network and show you it is not just for women, and men are welcome. This network is about equal opportunities for all people in BT, regardless of their gender.
